As the National Park Service prepares to release its latest annual report, the agency is trying to make sure visitors are prepared for a wild winter.
The agency said Wednesday that a handful of campsites on the continent are currently being set up as winter campsites for the park’s Mammoth Lakes Wilderness, the highest wilderness in the U.S.
The Mammoth lakes Wilderness, a 6.3-mile stretch of mountain-facing land, has a minimum occupancy of only 1,000 people per night.
The park, which encompasses a swath of southern Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming, has closed the park for the season.
The park is located on the border of Montana and Wyoming in the Rocky Mountains and the state’s northern border with Canada.
Its wilderness is closed during the winter months due to the harsh weather and snowfall.
